The Best Superhero Casting Playoffs: Round 1
The height of the Superhero genre in movies has reached it's peak. It's quite hard now for us to think of popular superheroes who haven't been casted yet. After watching Doctor Strange this week, we noticed how Benedict Cumberbatch was the absolutely perfect person to play the Doctor. Then we got into a huge debate on whether or not Chris Evans was a great pick for Captain America. So we decided it would be best to settle this argument in a playoff-style Death Battle. We will find who exactly is the perfect Superhero/villain casting by judging from four different categories; performance, appearance, and faithfulness to character.
Heath Ledger as Joker vs. Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow
Vince: Why is this even here?
Javier: No discussion here as Heath Ledger had one of the best cinematic performances of all time even outside of comic book movies.
Josh: One of them portrayed the most complex comic villain of all time masterfully. And the other is Scarlett Johansson.
Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool vs. Ben Affleck as Batman
Javier: Reynolds IS Deadpool. His comedic ability allows him to portray the Deadpool that us comic book fans know and love.
Josh: While Affleck’s Batman succeeds mainly due to a well-written script, Reynolds’ Deadpool relies heavily on the acting performance delivered by Reynolds himself.
Tom Hiddleston as Loki vs. Tom Holland as Spider-Man
Vince: Tom Holland! I don't care if he's new, this guy is the PERFECT Spider-Man. I promise you he'll be better than Hiddleston once he appears in more movies.
Javier: Tom Hiddleston’s performance as Loki remains as one of the few highlights in the Thor series. While Tom Holland has promising future as Spider-Man, Hiddleston is a favorite to leave fanatics all over devastated as we near his retirement from the MCU
Josh: Tom Hiddleston simply had more screen time to develop Loki, breathing life into a lesser known character. Though Holland’s acting skills were great, he still has a lot to learn before he’s ready to save anyone. But I believe Tom Holland can save the world….
Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury vs. Patrick Stewart as Professor X
Vince: If we somehow forget The Last Stand the X-movies and Patrick Stewart’s role as Prof X is actually quite impressive. #MutantandProud
Javier: Patrick Stewart’s rendition of Professor X is a victim of the poor continuity in the Fox Universe. While James McAvoy appears as a younger Professor X, Stewart’s performance is much more accurate showing wisdom, warmth, and leadership.
Josh: I feel like Nick Fury hasn’t had much to do, just Samuel L Jackson playing Samuel L Jackson. Patrick Stewart on the other hand adds a level of true gravitas in his performance and it doesn’t seem tacked on like Fury’s role often does.
Chris Evans as Captain America vs. Henry Cavill as Superman
Vince: I really hate any movie with Henry Cavill, or Superman, so this isn't much of a contest.
Javier: Chris Evans’ physical similarities complemented with his patriotic and boy scout attitude shows him as a genius casting for Captain America. Henry Cavill as Superman has the same poker face throughout the entirety of his films.
Josh: Cavill doesn’t act, he just flexes in front of a green screen.
Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn vs. Hugh Jackman as Wolverine
Vince: Love Margot Robbie but damnnnnn Suicide Squad was TERRIBLE, and oh yeah, Hugh Jackman is a badass.
Javier: Hugh Jackman’s character as the Wolverine is an iconic performance lasting 17 years and any recasting won’t be the same and would be disgraceful.
Josh: Jackman = Wolverine, Margot Robbie just played Harley, not really adding anything new or interesting to the character.
Robert Downey Jr. as Ironman vs. Tom Hardy as Bane
Vince: The first Ironman movie is probably as revolutionary as the discovery of fire.
Javier: If you were to take Tony Stark straight out of a comic book, you’d get Robert Downey Jr. His performance in the first Iron Man opened the floodgates of high quality comic related films and paved the way for their success.
Josh: Gotta give it to Hardy for that weird Bane voice, but RDJ just embodies the role of Tony Stark so well that the two are almost inseparable.
Winner: Downey Jr.
Michael Fassbender as Magneto vs. Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman
Vince: Both perfect for their role but we've seen too little of Gadot to actually compare her to the greatness of Fassbender.
Javier: While Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman is one of the most anticipated performances currently, Michael Fassbender’s contribution to Magneto as a big screen character is pivotal as he portrayals one of the most complicated and infamous personas in comic history.
Josh: Gal Gadot??? What a joke, Fassbender is one of the best actors today and a lot of that has to do with how well he has portrayed Magneto in the new X-Men trilogy.
Round 1 Results
Not a lot of tough decisions here. Unsurprisingly, most of our answers were similar. We guess that the first round separated the good casting choices from the great ones. Here is the bracket after round 1, make sure to check out round 2 to find out which actor/actress truly is the face of the superhero industry.
